As part of Curiosity’s internship program, we encourage interns to pursue a personal project to work on during their time here. We are so proud to have had Breanna Tauscher these past couple of months and to see her grow as a designer. Check out her guest blog below and see the awesome poster she screenprinted! “Everyone’s been asked whether they’re a cat or a dog person but what about all those other great pets out there that you can also own, legally of course? With this question in mind I, the Curiosity Intern, began a design to determine just that.After deciding that a poster would be the best format for this project, I started researching what animals could be owned, including those off-the-wall ones that people often forget about. From there I narrowed my selection down to 18 that covered the basic spectrum of the human personality.

Then it was time to generate the questions that would determine that perfect companion using complex mathematical algorithms. These equations are extremely technical though so I won’t go into detail about them here, let’s just say they work.

My burgeoning first attempt at a design was a bit of a flop. Too structured, too organized, too boring. Plenty of info but not enough graphic, and so I scrapped this idea and took the design in a whole new direction.

After a crazy drawing session using Rory’s infamous red pencil I churned out this sketch. A crazy wonderful mess of icons, banners, and arrows leading the viewer to their results.

From there it was just a matter of making some edits and bringing that idea into a tidy two-layered design for screen printing.

I decided on white and metallic gold for the screen printing ink and French Paper Co.’s blu rasberry pop-tone paper. Here’s a photo of the final product below. Please enjoy and find your Ideal Pet. Our Calligraphic Heritage

Came across this old calligraphy book yesterday (can’t say how, but it was actually going to be destroyed!!!) by Ismar David published in 1979 by Geyer Studio, Inc. Its all packaged together in a linen box and includes the book, individual cards for each of the type styles described in the book and some laminated calligraphy cards featuring famous quotes. HP makes it in the top 5 for Big Brand’s Twitter Effectiveness. Guess who writes their tweets and the content the tweets drive to?

Bam.

Introducing Taiwan-Ilha Formosa

This beautiful book was created by Taiwanese designer Tien-Min Liao. Titled Ilha Formosa, the book is meant to introduce Taiwan through amazing papercraft infographics.

“Why
When I came to the United State, I noticed that many people don’t know my hometown Taiwan. Some people even cannot tell the difference between Taiwan and Thailand, just because they sound alike. As a designer, I think I should do something to promote this beautiful island.

Challenge
I would like to do something very different from the other books about Taiwan. It would definitely not be a tourist guide, nor a boring government-published book. It should be interesting and casual, but also clear in delivering the information about Taiwan.”
